The Painter's Sketch: Drawing from Nature

An intensive weekend workshop

paintingThis workshop will begin with a Fri. night presentation on the great masters who painted studies of the White Mountains. In the two days that follow, Michael will demonstrate on location, two compositional approaches used in painting plein air painting in oils, and watercolors. These approaches will help you to produce multiple studies in a short period of time while depicting a reasonable facsimile of this regions' most beautiful and dramatic sites.

Emphasis will be on creating a full value range and creating the illusion of space. This workshop will be an excellent way to respond to the raw nature and ever changing moods of the White Mountains while building up a portfolio of painted sketches that represents your experiences in nature. (for an $75 fee, Jackson Art can provide you with supplies for the class)

About the Instructor

instructorMichael Vermette has over 40 years experience in pastel, oil, and watercolor painting and has holds a BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art. He has received numerious awards for his paintings throughout New England and the United States through Open Juried Shows. He recently won the "Beverly" award in the 12th Biennial North American Open Show of the New England Watercolor Society in Gloucester, MA 2010. In 1999 he was a Carina House Artist in Residence on Monhegan Island and filmed valuable interviews of Ann Hubert who knew James Fitzgerald and Rockwell Kent personally. While filming interviews with Ann Hubert he put into practice the principals he learned from her about how James Fitzgerald worked. He is a two time artist-in-residence for Acadia National Park and is currently the Baxter State Park resident artist for 2011-2012.

Michael keeps a balance of painting and teaching, painting in his studio and plein air while teaching through Maine Indian Education at the Indian Island Reservation School, as a Maine Certified Art teacher for 25 years. He has taught for Maine College of Art Continuing Studies for over 20 years. His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout New England and is represented by the Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Falmouth, Maine, The Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth, Maine and the Northlight Gallery in Millinocket, Maine.
